How Sustainable Is Kowtow?

Kowtow is a New Zealand based slow-fashion apparel brand. Kowtow carefully directs their attention on producing long lasting clothes from organic, renewable, and biodegradable fabrics. Kowtow uses Tencel textiles (a sustainably harvested and manufactured material created from wood pulp), organic cotton, a wool and recycled nylon blended textile, and Econyl (a vegan and environmentally responsible material that is constructed from post-consumer nylon waste). All of Kowtow’s printed textiles are created in-house with low impact and metal free dyes to guarantee full environmental responsibility including proper treatment of waste water. Kowtow uses only natural agoya shell buttons from Japan, and natural corozo nut and recycled hemp buttons from Italy in all of their designs. Kowtow’s trims and hems are additionally all certified safe by Oeko-Tex. This brand uses only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved paper products as well as only soy-based ink in altogether of their tags and boxes, undoubtably making all of their packaging 100% recyclable.

Kowtow is working towards achieving full circularity within their supply-chain. Kowtow designs and constructs their pieces with their garments’ complete lifecycle in mind, from fiber to post-consumer consumption. Kowtow offers a complimentary repair service for minor damages to their items and makes available the Japanese patching technique of Sashiko for a small fee for larger rips or mishaps that may occur. To further reduce their apparel pieces going to landfills and to continue minimizing their carbon footprint, Kowtow has also started offering a “Take Back Program” for their clothing. While this “Take Back Program” is still in the beginning phases, Kowtow invites customers interested in it, to email them at customercare@kowtowclothing.com in order to arrange an assessment.

Is Kowtow Ethically-Made?

Kowtow manufactures their products together with two partner factories in India. These factories are located in Kolkata and Mumbai, and both are SA8000 certified. This SA8000 certification ensures that all workers are: being paid fairly, receiving social security support, obtaining retirement funds, getting compensated for holidays in addition to paid sick days, receiving medical insurance, securing overtime payment, allowed to unionize , and able to enjoy subsidized free meals. These SA8000 certified factories must pass frequent audit tests from independent third party verification establishments as well as qualifying and following the Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS)’s strict requirements. Furthermore, Kowtow utilizes only Fair Trade Labelling Organisations International (FLO) certified cotton. This means Kowtow is supporting small-scale farms that guarantee workers’ rights and encouraging fairer terms of trade between cotton farmers and buyers (including themselves and others).

Is Kowtow a Vegan Company?

Kowtow is not a vegan brand as they use: mohair, alpaca fleece, and wool in a portion of their apparel products. However, Kowtow sources these materials from local farmers in New Zealand, who never use cruel mulesing methods and legally must commit to the upmost standards of animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Kowtow does on the other hand, sell shoes from the brand Veja on their website and these contain leather.
