How Sustainable Is Whimsy + Row?

We categorize Whimsy + Row as a sustainable brand for many reasons. Firstly, they focus on waste-free manufacturing by creating limited style quantities; and only producing more of the same fashion items when their customers ask for it specifically through their waitlist feature on their website.

Secondly, Whimsy + Row produces almost all of their garments locally, which considerably reduces their carbon footprint.

Thirdly, they utilize solely eco-friendly fabrics and textiles that require less energy and water to create, such as: organic cotton, natural linen, Tencel (an eco-friendly fabric made from sustainable dissolved wood pulp), deadstock or upcycled textiles, Cupro (“a vegan silk”, made from typically discarded cotton linter fibers), biodegradable viscose, and Modal (a carbon neutral fabric made from beech wood). Fourthly, Whimsy + Row also only uses low-impact dyes and washes like ecological enzymes, in the place of toxic and dangerous chemicals.

Is Whimsy + Row Ethically-Made?

Yes, Whimsy + Row’s apparel and accessory fashion pieces are all ethically-made. Practically every garment is handmade in Los Angeles, USA, only a few miles away from Whimsy + Row’s headquarter offices. This allows for increased brand transparency and lets the brand remain in full control of warehouse management and inspections. This is vital in maintaining matters such as clean and safe working conditions as well as other workers’ rights like fair wages and enforcing anti-discrimination and anti-racism in the workplace.

Whimsy + Row’s swimwear items are the only pieces not produced in Los Angeles. They are instead made in Bali, Indonesia by Toast Swim, a distinguished women-owned and operated ethically and environmentally sound brand partner. Toast Swim produces these swimsuits and bikinis for Whimsy + Row in a sustainable factory that was built using International Green Regulations (LEED).

Additionally, once a month employees and friends of Whimsy + Row come together to give back to the community. In the past, they have participated in beach clean-ups and collected donations for One Tree Planted, Global Fund for Women, Black Lives Matter, Downtown Women’s Health Center, Feeding America, and more.

Is Whimsy + Row a Vegan Company?

Whimsy + Row is working towards becoming a vegan company. Currently, almost all of the textiles in their apparel and accessory fashion pieces are plant-based, with the sole exception of some recycled and upcycled fabrics.

The brand at present, claims to be dedicated to only selling cruelty-free products in their sustainable marketplace, yet, they do sell shoes with leather soles or leather outer parts that are definitely not suitable for vegans or vegetarians. Nevertheless, stated on their website, they do claim to be looking for vegan alternatives and aspiring to offer only vegan merchandise in the near future.
